The Time for Open Enrollment is Here!

Make your plan decision before Open Enrollment ends on January 15!

Winterizing the house before the first cold snap is hard work! It’s also a very good reason to make sure you have the health insurance plan you need.

Just look at John. He was cleaning out his gutters when he fell off the ladder, hitting his head on the way down. John’s wife Ashley helped him inside. She noticed a bump on the side of his head and insisted they go to the ER.

All John could think about were the upcoming holidays—and the cost of an ER visit. Aside from the slight ringing in his ears, he felt fine. There was no need to check for a concussion, right? But Ashley insisted. She also reminded John that he had recently purchased a Hooray Health plan. She was certain that even though they had not yet met their ACA Silver health insurance plan deductible, their out-of-pocket cost would be much lower using the Hooray Health plan.

Let’s take a look at the typical costs of an ER visit for a possible concussion:

Procedure National Average Cost
ER Visit $1,000
CT Scan $2,000
Follow-Up/Specialist Visits $1,000
Rehab/Physical Therapy (10 Visits) $1,500
Additional Medical Costs $500
Total Out-of-Pocket $6,000

Autumn is an exciting time of year. The leaves are changing—and open enrollment period is almost here. This is your opportunity to enroll in a new health insurance plan (or make changes to an existing plan).

Back to fall for a minute though – when it comes to fall sports, families need to be prepared.

Here’s Alex, who was playing backyard football when he fell down. His parents took him to the closest urgent care clinic, where they got a referral to an orthopedist. It looked like Alex had torn his ACL. Luckily his parents had purchased family coverage through a Hooray Health plan offered through his father’s gig platform.

At the time, Alex’s family was not even close to meeting their ACA Marketplace plan deductible of $14,000. This meant that all of the treatment costs up to that amount would be 100% out-of-pocket. Consider the typical cost of treating a torn ACL without surgery:

Procedure National Average Cost
Urgent Care Visit $200
Orthopedist Visit $300
Follow-Up Orthopedist Visit $150
MRI (Imaging Facility) $650
Brace $500
Crutches $500
Physical Therapy (10 Visits) $1,500
Total Out-of-Pocket $3,800

Now let’s take a look at John’s out-of-pocket costs:

Total Cost of TreatmentACA Silver Plan with $14,000 Deductible (Unmet)Hooray Health Plan
$6,000$6,000$0*

*$0 cost with a Hooray Health plan and accidental coverage of up to $7,500 per incident with services performed at an in-network location.

It turned out that John did have a concussion—and his ER visit might have saved his life. He and Ashley are very grateful for not only the care they received, but the out-of-pocket costs they saved with their Hooray Health Plan.
